Our advices
The most economical solution for exchanging money
When traveling to a country that uses a different currency, you have several options:
1 – Visit a currency exchange office before you leave
2 – Visit a currency exchange office there
3 – Order foreign currency from your bank
4 – Use your bank card there
We recommend exchanging a minimum of currency at a currency exchange bureau before your departure. You’re not guaranteed to find a currency exchange bureau immediately upon arrival. Furthermore, if you don’t necessarily speak the language spoken in the destination country, this could complicate the transaction and lead to you being ripped off by “tourist traps” that charge high rates.
Furthermore, banks often charge higher commissions than at a currency exchange bureau, so you’ll get less currency for the same amount spent.
You’ll probably be able to use your bank card there; however, we recommend bringing cash with you to avoid potential malfunctions with your payment method. Also, find out about the fees your bank charges for withdrawals or payments abroad. Furthermore, for some destinations, you may have difficulty finding an ATM or paying with your bank card.
Don’t hesitate to ask our currency exchange specialists in Geneva for advice.
What currency should I take with me?
Should I take cash with me?
To compensate for possible limits, bank charges, or even bank card malfunctions, it is best to have foreign currency with you. It is recommended to leave with enough cash to last at least one or two days in the country of arrival. Buying your currency before leaving is often more advantageous and will save you the stress of finding an ATM or exchange office upon arrival in a country you are not yet familiar with.
What currency to buy if local currency is not available?
For some destinations like Argentina, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Mexico, etc., the local currency is not available, however, merchants accept other currencies like the US dollar. For more information, ask our experts or consult the table below.
